Magic Moving & Storage: Building Customer Relationships With Year-Round Marketing

Even as business slows during the winter, this eastern San Francisco Bay Area moving company stays connected with customers. “The market may be slow in the winter months, but we’re constantly out there meeting and contacting our affiliates,” says Nancy Brookshire, who co-owns Magic Moving & Storage with her husband, David.

Building Relationships Through Consistent Communication

Both Nancy and David value open, two-way communication — with clients, affiliates and employees. Skilled at marketing, they constantly communicate and network with affiliates, real estate agents and customers and are always on the lookout for new advertising sources.  While David is involved with local chambers of commerce and other community organizations, Nancy connects with her contacts at open houses, attends weekly REALTOR® meetings, sends gift cards with a thank you and regularly communicates across various platforms with those on her email list.

“We aggressively use Constant Contact and send flyers and wishes during the holidays — little tidbits along the way so when they need a mover, they think of us,” she says. “We had a lot of responses from people wishing us happy Halloween with cute pictures of their kids.”

The Early Days of Building a Business

Concerted marketing efforts have helped build Magic Moving & Storage, which has come a long way from its start in the Brookshires’ third-floor studio apartment in Walnut, California, more than 20 years ago.

“In those days, David hoofed stacks of moving blankets, dollies and other equipment up and down three flights of stairs,” Nancy says. “With a magnet on the car doors, displaying the company logo and phone number, and moving equipment tied to the rooftop through the windows of his Toyota Celica, David appeared to many as the Grinch who stole Christmas.” David’s makeshift “moving truck” might have given onlookers a questionable impression of his new business, but it was attention-grabbing just the same.

From a Full Carload to Full-Service Mover

Today, Magic Moving & Storage continues to attract attention. As a full-service mover with 15 crews, many of their clients offer repeat business and referrals. “If you bring [your business] to us, we find a way to do it, even when we can’t do it ourselves,” David says.

That’s where NationalExpress Move has been a resource, helping Magic Moving expand its reach without compromising its high standards. “National helps me funnel moves, especially the smaller ones, when we can’t be as competitive,” Nancy explains.

“It’s a synergistic working partnership that has enabled our company to further deliver to our customers,” says David.

As anyone knows, meeting customer needs only goes so far in sustaining a business. A company must possess other stellar qualities, and Magic Moving & Storage has many.

Known for professionalism and trustworthiness, personalized service and dependability; open, two-way communication and long-standing relationships, the Brookshires have seen their business thrive even as the economy changes.

“We have been lucky to possess such a high repeat-customer rate,” she says. “When you take care of your customers, they’ll come back to you or refer you.”

Success at Magic Moving & Storage isn’t tied to a season. It comes from staying connected to customers all year long. David and Nancy’s steady communication and thoughtful outreach turn even small interactions into meaningful connections that build customer loyalty and keep their business thriving.
